Corrugated Tray Styles: Infold vs Outfold Trays

Home // Blog // Tips & Guides // Corrugated Tray Styles: Infold vs Outfold Trays

With the many styles of corrugated trays available, it can seem daunting to choose the best one for a given project.  Infold and outfold trays are both types of glued trays and can visually appear fairly similar. However they each have strengths and weaknesses that make them better suited to particular projects. That’s why we’ve listed out some of the most pertinent information about each tray style, to help guide you in selecting the best style for your needs.

Infold Trays

Infold trays are designed so that the board memory of the folded tray naturally pushes inward. This makes them great for lids, or other applications where a tight fit is necessary.

Pros

  • Don't bow out, helping product stay secure
  • Infold trays have a smaller folded footprint than outfold trays

Cons

  • Typically more expensive than outfold trays due to producing extra waste
  • Infold trays are more difficult to glue due to the memory and extra thickness of the board
  • Get less in a pallet than outfold

Outfold Trays

Outfold trays naturally open outward. This makes them easier to load and good for a wide variety of applications.

Pros

  • Are easier to glue than infold trays
  • Generally less expensive than infold trays
  • Outfold trays tend to stay open wider than infold trays, making for easier packing
  • Get more on a pallet

Cons

  • Tend to bow out, making them hold product less securely
  • Often require plastic wrap or another agent to stay upright
